Tucked into a residential neighborhood in East Austin, Boggy Creek Farm offers a rare combination of living history and locally grown food. This five-acre urban farm operates a farmers market Wednesday through Saturday and has been a cornerstone of Austin’s farm-to-table culture for decades.

A Farm-to-Table Experience Unlike Any Other Farmers Market in Austin

Amid East Austin’s vibrant mix of art studios, restaurants, and music venues, Boggy Creek Farm remains a working farm where much of what’s sold is grown just steps from the farm stand. Organic farming practices and a commitment to seasonal produce define the market experience.

Shoppers can find a rotating selection of fresh fruits and vegetables grown on-site, including heirloom tomatoes, arugula, squash, and watermelon. The farm also grows fresh-cut flowers, which are available alongside produce at the stand. The farm’s website is regularly updated to reflect current offerings and market hours.

In addition to produce, Boggy Creek Farm sells eggs from its own chickens. Because supply is limited, eggs often sell out early in the day, making morning visits especially worthwhile.

The farm is located in a residential area, and the driveway entrance can be easy to miss. Once inside the gate, the farm stand is located to the left and behind the historic farmhouse.

Local Dairy, Meat, and Artisan Goods at the Farm Stand

Beyond produce, the farm stand offers a curated selection of locally sourced foods from Central Texas producers. Shoppers may find honey, cheese, dairy products, and responsibly raised meats sourced from nearby farms.

Boggy Creek Farm also carries small-batch artisan goods that make thoughtful souvenirs or gifts. Items often include handmade soaps, pottery, aprons, and other crafts created by local makers, reinforcing the farm’s strong connection to the Austin creative community.

The History of Boggy Creek Farm Dates Back to the 1800s

Boggy Creek Farm is as historically significant as it is agriculturally productive. The original homestead was purchased in 1839, and the farmhouse built in 1841 is one of the oldest surviving structures in Austin.

Current owner Carol Ann Sayle and her late partner Larry Butler purchased the abandoned property in 1992. Through extensive restoration and historical research, they uncovered evidence that Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas, attended a wedding on the property. Their work helped establish Boggy Creek Farm as Austin’s first modern urban farm.

Today, the farm continues to be operated by Sayle and her family, preserving both the land and its history.

Sustainable and Organic Farming Practices in Austin

Boggy Creek Farm uses sustainable, regenerative growing methods designed to work with Central Texas soil and climate conditions. The farm follows a no-till approach, relying on compost, crop rotation, and soil stewardship rather than chemical pesticides.

These practices support climate resilience, maximize limited urban land, and improve soil health for future generations. Compost produced on-site, including contributions from the farm’s chickens, naturally fertilizes crops and reduces waste.

Workshops, Events, and Community Programs at Boggy Creek Farm

In addition to its weekly farmers market, Boggy Creek Farm hosts special events and educational programming throughout the year. Workshops, volunteer days, and cultural events allow visitors to engage more deeply with the farm.

Boggy Creek Farm also serves as a setting for occasional cultural events created by members of Austin’s creative community. One example is Fables from the Farm, a multi-course tasting and live performance experience developed by a local Austin artist Jade Fusco and presented on the property for a number of performances between 2023 and 2025.
